Solar Garden lights

Catskill Deb's picture

I want to recommend the solar outdoor lights that we got at Lowe's.  DH got me the original ones in December, which we finally put out in the garden a couple of weeks ago.  (My typical quick response...)  They were $100 for a box of 12 at Lowe's.  They have a copper top (like upside down saucer with solar collector set into the top) over glass shade and on a copper post, very classy and understated.  Each one has 3 LED's and is about 6" diameter and 20" tall.  A lot of people on the garden tour commented on how nice they were, and I decided to go back for another box of them.  Lowe's still has them, only now they're $88 for a box of 12.  The brand is "Portfolio Outdoor".

I bought some solar lights at Costco a few months ago. They're globe shaped and change colors. I love them, even went back for a second set. They don't provide much light but they look really cool out in the garden.

Karen, I think I must have gotten the same for my birthday. SIL and BIL got them at Costco, two with a moon surrounding the globes and two with a sun. They do light up nicely and change colors. We have Camp Grandma and Grandpa next week and I'm thinking the grandchildren will love them too.

Those are the ones. My nieces were here last weekend and were mesmerized. I am too, when nobody's looking.

Abbie, mine are globes but with no moon or sun. Mine look like mosaic balls in the daylight. gold silver and a bronzie colour.

Nanook, I think I've seen those too. You have to wonder what clever person thought up the idea of solar lights in the first place, and giving them color as well.

they are very cool!
I also bought this glow in the dark powder that you sprinkle on your garden at nite. I'm waiting for our next party before I try it and am wondering whether it is ecologically okay.

I wonder if Monsanto could find a way to splice it into the genes of all our little garden pests; then there's be nowhere for them to hide!

Way cool! If it was mosquitoes do you suppose they'd glow pink?

We have the big six-inch kind; that's a surreal image. Think of the slime!

Hey, I've just had a thought. Do you suppose a glowing powder would deter deer from my plants? Do they see color? Would they eat something that glowed in the dark? You can tell how desperate I am.

unfortunately I don't have deer coming into the garden but I bet it would really weird them out! I would try it, it only costs about 5.oo a jar so not a huge investment except if it rains! Now imagine raindrops hitting the powdered leaves at nite and bouncing all over. I bet the buggers would be running for their lives!!!

This is getting seriously weird. Glowing green slug slime, pink phosphourescent mosquitoes and a zillion flashing raindrops. whoa, dude, it's 1968 again.

I'll stick with my lightening bugs. I watched my toad eat one a couple of days ago. I *really* wished it had been dark.

ha! ha! ha!
Canadian tire was originally a tire and tool store and has been part of Canadian heritage for many many years! It's basicly a giant hard ware store.

OMG! I got the same ones for mothers day! We have no street lighting so they are really cool from the road. They look like floating orbs. I also sprinkled some glo dust (don't know how eco-friendly it is) but it was pretty cool during one of our family get togethers!

We don't have street lighting, paved roads or a Costco.  I thought it was pretty neat when Lowe's and Home Depot both came to town a couple years ago.  Before that we just had Walmart and the tiniest J C Penney's store you ever saw.  The "magnet" department store at our mall was a K-Mart but it closed during their bankruptcy (or whatever it was).

our walmarts are huge here. They're trying to move into wine country and there's a bit of an uproar there, but for me it's fairly convenient being able to do the one stop shopping. The area that they're in was pretty isolated so it didn't really affect the small mom and pop stores just gave some competition to the larger store owners that were building their mansions on our dollars!

Yes, the one here is huge.  I just go there if there's something I can't get elsewhere in town and I don't feel like driving the hour to Binghamton.

Oh, I got those too! I thought they might be cheesy but I love them!
I can look out my window at night and watch them change colors -- they are so cool!! I was also testing to see if I had enough sun back there now that I have lost all my white and green ash trees (to the emerald ash borer) since there still are a lot of oaks and willow trees. Since these are working so well, I'm going to get a box of solar lights next summer....
