Success or Failure? (post #11533)

After 10 days in North Carolina, I'm back. I went there to do an intervention for Karen. Anyone who has ever been there knows why. She's a huge plant junkie. Unfortunately, the intervention was a terrible failure. It took two hours to pack all the plants in my Jeep so I could get them home.

But we got some things done. Her garage garden is smaller (only slight thanks to me) and we got a small percentage of her treasures in her greenhouse. She's got a lot more to go in really soon. I'm busy that weekend.

Could you put me on your schedule for next May please? I thought I'd book you early. Anyone else?

Again, if you're in need of an intervention, clearly, I'm not the person to reach out to. I thought I was strong, but I'm powerless against this baffling illness.

Heck no, I don't want an intervention, I just want enthusiastic garden help! And by the way, your package is in the mail as of yesterday.

I've been trying to lure Jeana up here for as long as I can remember. She won't even bend for snow-cones. Lemon ones.

Jena, your willingness to help and friendship are an inspiration to us all. Anytime you're up this way, you are welcome to stop by for a glass of Niersteiner, a sail, and a wander through our weedbeds.

Yeah, "lemon" snow cones. Right.

I just realized I can't go to St. Thomas this month because I never bothered to get a passport (to go to a US TERRITORY!). I'm trapped in this country.

So are you saying you will be home that weekend after all?

I thought I still had so much time, then after you left they changed the dang weather page. They really shouldn't be allowed to do that once I've made plans around the 5 day forecast.

Well, you've always got the garage handy, right? I think you ought to build a cold frame over the wall.

Hey, I'm out there truckin' away this afternoon. Work be d.... I know my priorities, and I'm going to make it. And I'll take photos to prove it.

Edited to add: OK, so I'm not truckin' at this exact moment. But give me a minute and I'll be right back at it. Just wanted to say that before you did.

You're probably getting more done than I am. I just wander around, potted plant in hand, thinking I have nowhere to put it. Then, overcome with mosquitos, I go back in. I'm going to check online tonight for out-of-country sources for DDT.

We have a plague of mosquitos. I'm about ready to get a hazmat suit and a bee hat.

Thanks to you I'm far ahead of the weather game compared to usual. Next year I'm coming out there and we'll pay a visit to Troy. He should probably start chaining things down now.

I haven't asked if I could come out to his place for that reason. I don't need a criminal record at this stage in my life.

At what stage in your life do you need a criminal record?  I'm waiting until I hit 75 or 80 (hopefully).

We'll see how the health care and social security thing shakes out. I need to keep my options open for my retirement years.

I read this morning that SSI will be frozen, no increases. Not a bad idea, saving the gov't some moohlah, ha ha.

It would have to be white collar, like swindling other people out of their life savings, nothing tacky like robbing a nursery of all their choicest plants.

What if you robbed a trailer park of the plastic flowers? Would that be criminal, or community service?

A number of years ago some frat boys kidnapped a bunch of pink plastic flamingoes down in Florida and held them for ransom; they sent videos of the flamingoes being tortured with blowtorches. They demanded exorbitant ransoms but never said when, where or how to deliver it. Always wondered if they would have been prosecuted or rewarded.

In the midwest there is a fad-fundraiser where people come and plant a pink flamingo on a lawn in the dark of night and you have to make a donation to their cause to make the flamingo go away. I'm not sure how successful this is, but church youth groups do this.

We've been having a cold snap since last Thursday with daytime highs in the low to mid 40's and temps at night in the 20's.  This morning we got our first snow flurry of the season.  It feels like winter is almost upon us.  And yet they're predicting that by next Monday and Tuesday it will be sunny with highs in the 50's again.  We call it Bob-Summer (as opposed to Indian summer).  My husband's cousin Bob usually visits from Arizona in the third week of October, and regardless of how dreadful the weather has been before that, it gets warmer and sunny while he's here.  And yes, this year he arrives late on Sunday, just in time for the warming trend.  It's spooky how those golfers do that.

Karen's picture

Do you think Bob could swing by here first?

"Enthusiastic" is a matter of perspective. It's always more fun playing in someone else's yard than your own.

You mean that you've been in NC all that time?  And you didn't hop on the Wolviemobile to Scott and Gretchens Equanox parr-tee.
