Spray n Grow? Yes or No?
Just got a catalog for Spray N Grow formula spray. What's your opinion? What is your best fertilizer for your tomatoes and vegetable garden? With soooo many products out there...compost teas, vitamins, kelp, etc. How does your garden grow??? N=P=K ratio? I compost, but still wonder about fertilizing: how much; how often? What was your secret to a bumper crop?

The best fertilizer for any plant is a good, healthy soil well endowed with organic matter that is evenly moist but well drained. Plants need from the soil much more that just the N-P-K that many synthetic fertilizers provide and they get that from a soil with an active Soil Food Web. Beyond that soil well endowed with organic matter nothing more is needed.

If you're looking for bumper crops of veggies, use compost or aged manure. Synthetics can make for lush growth that makes plants more likely to get pests and they can also damage soil life.
Personally, if you want to use a spray, try Monty's Joy juice. I'm not a fertilizer kind of person - I just don't think they're worth the money or effort. But MJJ makes a big difference. It isn't inexpensive, but it's *very* concentrated (1 tsp. per gallon of water) and I'm been really impressed with results.

I say yes, yes , yes. I've been using it for years. It is not a fertilizer, it makes your fertilizer or compost work better, and is totally organic. One small experience I just had with it last week was seed starting. I planted some tomato seeds that did not germinate, so I took the rest of the seeds in the packet and soaked them in a Spray 'n Grow solution for a few minutes and planted them. Every single seed germinated! I've been using the stuff for at least 10 years now and I have to say I'm not a person who likes to fritter money away uselessly!

What's in it? All I can find on the internet (from a product MSDS sheet) is 0.10% iron and 0.05% zinc (derived from iron sulfate and zinc chloride).
