color of oak leaves

I have 2 very large common (brown leaved at this time of year) oaks in my yard , and a newly springing up (very bright red leaved ) baby oak. I wanted to know if this is just because the sapling is so young and it is just another common oak, that will turn green leaved in the summer and brown leaved in the fall,  or is it possible that this is a different variety of oak that will be red-leaved even as an adult? I guess my real question is do the leaves start out a different color when the tree is very young and darken with age? Thank you.

If the leaves are the same shape, then the color difference is probably due to the young age of the small one. If the leaf shape is different, it may be a different type, though the leave on young oaks often don't look like the leaves on larger ones.

If you didn't plant that baby (post #11786, reply #2 of 2)

If you didn't plant that baby then the most likely theory of its origin is that its from one of the big

oaks.  We might be aware about crows, jays & squirrels burying seeds - but just-the-one

& that one takiing root....probably not.
