My daughter has a school assignment in
whcih she has to answer a few gardening
questions: Learn different ways plants
are grown and some ways of changing a
species of plant to bring out a desired
characteristic or to strengthen the
species. Can anyone help me?

I think we *could* answer those questions, but don't you think your daughter should be researching them? When it comes to things like that, I never let my son ask other people for answers. It would be sooooo much easier to answer the questions for him since he has several disabilities, but that would be doing him an injustice. That's the reason he's the one going to school, not me. He has to learn and research is one of the best ways to learn.

I really agree with Jeana! The internet has many web sites that are very informative on all subjects. If you take her to the library, try The Victory Garden. I'm not sure if that particular question will be answered, but it's a good book and a good place to start. Good Luck!

My first reaction was "who's report is this, mom?"
You said it more kindly than I would have, Jeana.
Is this why kids graduate without an education nowdays?

Yep -- I agree. If that was my child, I'd drive her to the library and help her find some books to read about gardening. Basic gardening guides will probably answer most of her questions. However, she should do the reading (and learning) herself.
Another good way to learn is to find a volunteer opportunity where you get to work with plants. I've learned quite a bit about propogation through my volunteer work at one of our local greenhouses.

Karen,
I, too, agree with all the above, however, you don't say how old your daughter is or the grade of information she needs. These questions could be for a child in grade two or one in grade twelve.
I presume your child is younger, as she would be the one surfing the net, so try these addresses:
www.garden.com www.gardening.com http:tv.cbc.ca/candiangardener http:cl-gardener.com/
or just search for plant growing information, including cross-pollination or propagation.
Sorry to all the above, I used to work in a library and this just kinda goes with the turf. I didn't give any answers but just some leads to try. What's that they say a Master Gardener is?.....
Good luck, Karen and come back if you need more leads, not answers to school work. :-)

You're right, Gina. A point in the right direction is the best you can do. I assumed someone had access to the internet, but I didn't want to suggest any keywords because there are libraries of information on just about any topic you could type in and I didn't want to overwhelm anyone. I'm glad you had some sights.

Gee, aren't we being a little hard on Karen.. She just asked for help, not answers. Gina's answer gets her started. It would help if we knew what grade level your daughter is at, Karen.
Look up hybridization, Mendel, Look up some of the plant-specific sites, such as the iris and lily web sites. Lily is lily.org. Sorry, don't know the iris one. Maybe try the RBG in Kew, England, Think that one is rbg.uk. I'm sure one of the search engines would find these for you.
Thanks a lot for the kind of (post #14036, reply #8 of 8)
