Garden Design -Distance Learning Courses

BrandonBoston's picture

I am interested in hearing from others who have (or are considering) a distance learning program for Garden/Landscape Design.

I worked for a Landscape Architect many years ago and did mostly drafting work (pre-CAD!) and have some good design sense...  However, that is not enough.

As with many of us, it is difficult to go to school full time while we have to work to pay the mortgages, raise kids, etc...   so, the idea of distance learning seems rather appealing.

Have any of you done this type of schooling to get a diploma/certificate for landscape/garden design?   I am interested in either the Institute of Garden Design or the English School of Garden Design.

Any recommendations or comments?

Many thanks in advance !

Hi BrandonBoston,

I just sent a question regarding my search for mac compatible design software and saw your 07 message.
Did you get some worthy replies from your ask about distance learning? This also interests me.

Hi Brandon,

I did my Independent Study via the University of Guelph in Ontario Canada.  My degree is in Ornamental Horticulture, but I believe they do offer concentraions in Garden/Landscape Design.   Distance learning worked well for me, though I did miss the hands-on environment and commraderie of other students.  However, that was years ago and I think now with newer technology, it's possible to work that in.

I don't have any knowledge of the schools you're interested in, but I just wanted to say that Distance Learning can be a good road to go.  Good luck!
