Bamboo

Hi All:
I live in zone 5 in Connecticut and I am looking for a bamboo that will grow tall (8-12 feet) and withstand the cold. I know it spreads but that is what I am looking for. In Zone 6 and 7 I have seen bamboo grow like wild fire in Long Beach Island- New Jersey or Shealter Island- New York. Can anyone help me find a tall bamboo to grow in Litchfield County?
Gregory

I am starting to feel like an ad for Raintree Nursery--but they do have some of the niciest decriptions and 10-12 different varities; hardy, clumping, running. raintreenursery.com but order their catalogue too, its a huge information resource! Good luck, I hope you won't be sorry with the running.

There is a nice article in the latest FG about clumping bamboos, some of which can make it in CT. I live in CT and have two kinds: Fargesia nitida and Fargesia robusta (which isn't supposed to be hardy enough to make it). Clumpers range from 6 to 15 feet in height. Burt Associates Bamboo in Massachusetts is a good source. If you want mail order, go to bamboogarden.com. Or check out the American Bamboo Society web site. There is a bamboo for your needs, I'm sure.
