Favorite Daylilies?

I'm thinkin' of planting a few more this year--they're just so darn easy (and I could use something that looks good even when I neglect it). And what about good sources? Anyone try Gilbert Wild and Son? (Their prices are good, but who knows...)

I'm not sure yet, because I planted new ones in the fall, from Oakes Daylilies, www.oakesdaylilies.com
As I recall I ordered some of the classic lemon yellow standard, and some pink ones named Meadow Mist.

Hi, Elizabeth - In the "References and Resources" folder we have that link to the site where people post their opinions of all different mail-order nurseries. Here's a direct link to what they say about Gilbert Wild & Son: http://pbmfaq.dvol.com/list/gilbertwild.html. The postings go back more than 5 years, so I'd pay more attention to the more recent ones. Looks to me like opinions are mixed, so you'll have to judge for yourself.

My favorite daylily is one that someone brought me when I was just starting my garden 7+ years ago. It's a tetraploid, heavy, fleshy petals, goldenrod yellow with a thin white stripe on each midrib and I think the throat is white but I don't remember for sure. I never knew its name, but I'll hunt down a pic to post. Maybe someone will be able to ID it.

Madeleine - I think it's
i "Woodbury".
She is a beauty.

Wilde is a good source, I recommend you pick out all the ones you like, go to the back of the catalog and order them in the 1/2 off deal area. You pick out $100 worth of daylilies and then pay half of what you pick out. It's a great deal and you get good plants, you really do. One must have that they carry is 'Charming Heart', a red-burgandy with a light yellow throat. Very sweet. I think they also carry 'Lullaby Baby' used in so much of the pink breeding. In any event, look for ones that say "Re" for "repeat bloomer." More blooms for your buck. Almost forgot, another good one is 'Artist Favorite'. I got most of my daylilies from Wilde and road trips out to Oakes.

One of my neighbors is way into daylilies so I never buy them, just wait for her to dump a clump on my back walkway. My favorite that she's given me is called Charlemagne. Doing a search, I think maybe it's called Castle Charlemagne. Here's a link:

Do people really pay these prices?

Pretty, but Good Lord! I certainly can't pay that price!

Yikes! That must be one mighty fine daylily!! Just think, Gretchen, you can start dividing yours and selling it. Even at 1/2 that price, you can buy a lot of other plants.

I got into daylilies last year. Fortunately, I also found a place near me that grows a bunch of unnamed seedlings. So, I would just wander through their field during blooming season and point to ones I liked and they would dig it up. Most were about $5.

We have some of those places around here Ann, but I've never been. Sounds like a good way to do it.

And that was one of their cheap ones!

Yes, Karen, it is great. One place has regular named varieties, and they have some very pricey ones.

This place that's closer to me has all unnamed varieties. They have a friend who likes to play around with hybridizing them, so he gives them the seedlings. You have to go there when the daylilies are in bloom so you see what you're getting, but they all seemed healthy and there was a nice variety of colors.

Lizbeth, if it's about the Wilde thang, I've never been disappointed.

There's one of those daylily fields around here, but I've never been. Maybe I should make a point of going this year. People rave about it.

Set yourself a limit or you'll end up with way too many DL's.

BeeJay...she's relatively new in my garden and not ready to divide yet. But when she's ready you'll be the first to know!
