Biggest Sunflower, y'all

1946's picture

This sunflower was a volunteer and really liked where it was growing. Volunteers follow the old saying "bloom where you are planted". Also included, Gatsby, my vole control, with his paw on a small vole.

Wow!! That sunflower is way tall. How tall do you think it is? It's pretty. That is cool.

About 12 feet.

OK, I'll give you $10 to rent Gatsby for a week.  :-)

Gatsby was a little offended by that offer, but says if you agree to throw in some canned tuna and a couple packets of "Greenies", his favorite cat treat, he will consider the offer.

A deal!  Put him on the bus and let us know when to run into town to meet him.  :-)

Buses? We don't have buses. This is Michigan, we only have cars.

Don't give me that.  GM makes buses too.  Quit stalling and put your little kitty on one.  :-)

Well, believe it or not we can leave our little town in an airplane, and I suppose we could hop a freight train if we were desperate, but the only buses coming into or going out of our area go to casinos, and no-where else. Since Gatsby is too young to gamble, he can not get on the casino buses. New plan?

Thanks for the helpful tip! I've heard about this service, but never checked it out before. It would be cheaper to book a people seat than to fly a pet.

I guess I'll have to come catnap him.  :-)  I do think I'm getting help from the visiting cats in the neighborhood.  I had a lot of evidence of chipmunks and voles in my beds outside the dog fence, and I've seen a couple cats hanging out there.  I hope they're having some luck.

Yes indeed that is the biggest sunflower, wow!  Nice picture, and the kitty too is precious.

I only get oilers that volunteer. Not nearly that impressive. And I can't have another outside cat as long as my old girl hangs on. She was 17 at the first of the year. She doesn't catch much of anything anymore, but she keeps me company.

Missed this thread earlier, did you? It took me a minute to figure out what you meant by "oilers", but yes I have those everywhere, thanks to the feeders and the chipmunks. In the spring the 'munks plant them in clumps all over the place, including in my flats of plants in the greenhouse, the pots on the deck, and in the flower beds. And your older kitty could enjoy the company of a younger sibling-well maybe not, my older kitty was not thrilled when we brought in the newer ones, but she got used to them. Our problem is we go the the animal shelter for a kitty, and bring home two, so now we have four. But I drew the line there and said no more trips to the shelter. Never. Ever. For now anyway........

I did miss the thread. I thought, yeah, bug sunflower. When I got around to it, it was a skyscraper sunflower.

The reason my old gal is an outside cat is that she doesn't work or play well with others. She may have to become an indoor cat whether she wants to or not someday, but I'm trying to avoid that as long as I can. She used to have zero tolerance for cats coming into her yard but after a fight last year which resulted in an abscess, she's now afraid of all cats she sees (except the inside cats, some of those she's afraid of, some she just hates). If I were to bring home a new cat, I think she'd leave. I really *need* a new outside cat, but I can't do that to her.

When I did alot more with rescue, it's tough to see all those cats that so desperately want out.

Wow that is one huge sunflower! It thinks it's competing with the tree behind it. & Gatsby is too cute.  My male cat is no good at mousing, & refuses to learn from the girls.

Typical guy. The girls could tell him, but I bet they can't tell him much.

Thank you, I think so too. We found him at the shelter at about 5-6 months of age and he had been there since he was a kitten. I couldn't believe someone else had not taken him much sooner. He is also the most mellow, laid-back cat we have ever had-except for his propensity to bite chunks out of the leaves of my house plants. I can't figure out how to break him of that habit, and have had to get rid of a few that could make him sick.
