I think Hedychium coronarium (post #15981, reply #1 of 10)
I think Hedychium coronarium (the butterfly ginger) actually does better in part shade. Down in FL at my dad's it'll burn a bit in full blazing sun. Love your palms, btw. Is the one in the last photo in a pot?

Yes, the Mediterainian date (post #15981, reply #2 of 10)
Yes, the Mediterainian date palm is in a pot and in the green house along with the Washingtonias. I have a needle palm and some windmill palms in the ground. Also have 3 large pots with 4-5 yr. old Sabal palmettos that I'm hardening off.

I've got a Sabal minor in the ground, been there for several years but apparently all the growth so far has been subterranean. I also bought a Trachycarpus this fall that will go into the ground next spring. I've always wanted one of those big silver looking palms but it would probably act as an annual in my zone.

You're right, I like it. Wish I'd known about it last summer when we were out that way. I visited one nursery near Emerald Isle but it was really expensive, I thought, for what they carried. I did manage to find a cool Drimiopsis species, but it was a bit of a splurge.
Raleigh is known for it's hardy palms scattered around in the city parks. There's a link to some photos on Gary's Palms.

Glad you like. I know the nursery you mentioned and they are pricey. Everything near the Island is $$$$. For me it is that nursery- Carolina Home And Garden- or drive the opposite direction towards Wilmington 50 miles to Pender Pines Nursery that is also expensive. So, I tend to shop Lowes mostly.Catalogs are great also.

Me too! It came from Vestal (post #15981, reply #9 of 10)
Me too! It came from Vestal NY right out a close friends gunk pile. A treasure hunt for me while visiting. 99% of the stones in our gardens are from same local. We take the car up there now. DH had a hard time steering the truck with the front tires barely touching the ground.
