Linneaus' Birthday
Saturday the 23 of may is the 302th Birthday of Carl Linneaus. Now there is a name that all gardeners can drink to. So let's all have a round of akvavit to the father of reliable plant names. Skaol.
So let's pick a time this saturday and each pick his favorite poison and host a glass to Carl.

Reliable plant names...I had to chuckle at that one. Of course, he's not the one who keeps changing them.

Yep, the taxonomists do throw us with a name change occasionally, don't they. What I mean is that we stand a better chance of getting the plant we want if we buy a plant by it's linnean binomial name than if we go by the common garden name

Someone asked me to name a time for our collective toast to Linneaus but today was the C&P Iris Soc show and I didn't know when I'd get home. Well, it's now 6:30 pm and I'm sitting here with my akvavit in my glass ready to toast.
Here's to Carl von Linnea. Skoal. Salud. Prost May we all love plants as he did. And may we always have USEFUL names for them.

I love plants, too! Except bamboo. And you don't want to know what kind of names I've been giving it today. But they ARE colorful.
Cheers!

I'm sharing your toast in NC. Time is unimportant, as I've been raising a glass all night. We're celebrating a 50th birthday tonight (not mine), and a log cabin, and a greenhouse (in progress). I wish you could have been here -- there was a cannon, which you would have liked. It was loud.

My akvavit was interesting stuff. It was Danish, not Swedish, and flavored with corriander and dill. Goes good with tonic water and a twist of lime. (An AT&T?) It's been a long time since I've been down the I-85 corridor. I've got to make an excuse or I'll miss your kids teenage years altogether.

Somebody brought a plastic gallon jug of moonshine to our party. One of the younger boys was looking for water -- barely wet his lips before he spit it out. It wasn't too bad. Had a little bit of a peachy flavor to it.

Sounds like your party was gooder'n snuff an' not half so dusty.

I'm glad to have met Linneaus! I have wandered about here and there at various seasons hoping to spot a plant or weed I hadn't seen before.
I'll try to remember to have a ginger beer in his honor this weekend.
