Salvia divinorum
Many states are biginning to outlaw this salvia. At present this halucinagen is illegal in Virginia and parts of Maryland but freely available in DC. Does that help explain what happens on The Hill?

Since one of the after-efects is a good mood, one has to assume they haven't been using it in Congress of late.

It's actually a very attractive salvia in bloom, but I doubt it will be available for gardeners in the future b/o this. I always thought I'd get one when the greenhouse was done since it's a winter bloomer, but I think my nursery source has probably quit offering it.

I used to grow Salvia in my garden in Virginia. I loved the look of the plant. I feel so naive.

There are many, many salvia varieties. Unless you were growing salvia divinorum (aka mexican mint), you were not growing anything that would excite a drug user.

I didn't know there were varieties. I bought the plant at the local nursery. Well, I feel better - oops, not because of the effects of the plant - LOL. Thanks for the good info.

It's unlikely that your salvia was this particular species. As Deb says, there are many wonderful salvias in garden cultivation, and this particular one was mainly a collector's item until its dubious pharmacologic properties were highlighted in the internet community.

Thank you, I am relieved. I wouldn't want to think I grew something that was illegal. I even hate to take an aspirin.

I don't like to take aspirin either. Unless it has codeine in it.
