Winter is here!
Well, I think I will try to put out a new thread and see how this goes! I drove home this afternoon with a nasty number 22 degrees on my car thermometer! Yuck! My fingers were freezing by the time I finished doing my outdoors things. And of course it is snowing. Looks like it is going to stick around this time. How long before spring?

Southernsoil is here!
I haven't been on this site in a long time only to stroll into this mess. We are supposted to get a winter mix tomorrow and I am not ready for it. I know that when spring arrives we will be ready for her beauty!
I had some snow several days (post #15771, reply #2 of 9)
I had some snow several days ago, first of the season. Only about 1-2 inches, but there are still patches here and there in continually shady spots. My garden soil has been partly mulched with leaves, and I intend to throw on some horse manure, what there is left of it.
I put away some special glads from Japan, from Pinetree Seeds. They have multiplied nicely, and now that I know that they were nipped in May last year, I'll plant later next season.
Hi Astrid, It seems our work (post #15771, reply #3 of 9)
Hi Astrid, It seems our work is never done. I also garden organic, useing a lot of composted horse manure and anything else I can compost. We are expected to have a winter mix tomorrow and all I can think of are the winter chores I will have coming up. We decided to have county water hooked up to the house and the plumber will have to rip thru 600 feet of property to lay the line! I feel like I need to be medicated just thinking about it. This spring I had alot of damage done to my driveway gardens that took awhile to repair and I am not looking forward to this.
I'm not really looking (post #15771, reply #4 of 9)
I'm not really looking forward to the possibility of this turning into freezing rain tomorrow evening. I'll have to get my rear end in gear to get the last of the potted gingers and crinums into the greenhouse tomorrow afternoon. It looks to be a wet and chilly task.

How is that huge greenhouse? (post #15771, reply #5 of 9)
How is that huge greenhouse? This will be my first winter with a greenhouse (12x20 hoophouse)There are 2 ceramic heaters in there and I am worried about when winter really sets in.

Oh how I wish I had a greenhouse! We've had snow here, too, and very early for Virginia. There is still plenty of the white stuff around since it was in the 20's when I got up this morning and hasn't really warmed much so far. Thank goodness I had done most of the raking and covered all my flower gardens with leaves.

Though it might be blasphemy, (post #15771, reply #7 of 9)
Though it might be blasphemy, I would have to say that I wouldn't want a greenhouse. I need the downtime away from the garden.
Oh, who am I kidding. I'd love one.

I had a 12x20 hoop house for a few years while I was doing the Farmers Mkt. The cool season vegetables, when planted at correct time so they'd size up for winter eating, are wonderful for winter salads, pac choi, and other vegetables. I even got an artichoke to grow! This fall I mixed all my vegetable seed together at the right time and now I have fresh greens. Yum.
So winter came and winter (post #15771, reply #9 of 9)
So winter came and winter went. Though personally, it was something that I looked forward to this year, or at least when it came.
I really like the idea of a cold weather, bordering freezing, but it is not really something that would suit my plants and crops so it sure was really tough to handle.
Though being familiar with the calendar should have helped, the weird pattern for the past couple of years was just something that is tough to keep up with.
