What do you plant with bearded iris?

We bought a house that has A LOT of bearded iris. My DH loves them, but I'm just ok with them. They are pretty when they bloom, but that's a short time. I'd like something that will look nice at other times of the year and maybe evem hide the iris leaves. I know they don't like a lot of water, so I'm concerned about what to plant with them. Amazingly, they haven't spread much and are spaced out all over the front and side yards. I'm going to move them to one or two areas, instead of being all over the place.

Oh, and we are in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. I'm not sure of our zone. Our climate is pretty mild and our lot is on a slope so drainage isn't a problem.

Thanks!

Bearded Iris (post #17786, reply #1 of 5)

I have Bearded Iris growing along with Phlox, DayLilies, Coneflowers, Roses, poppies, Gladiolas, Daffofils.

The sign of a good gardener is brown knees, not a green thumb.

Do you have any trouble with the rhiazomes rotting? Or don't you have to water them during the summer. I've read so much about rotting rhiazomes that I'm worried they will rot if I plant something that needs water during the summer. I haven't had a problem in the two summers we've lived here, so I guess I shouldn't be worried...

iris and deer (post #17786, reply #4 of 5)

All I'm worried about is deer.  Just like boxwood and yucca, when they are desperate they will eat them.  They eat bearded iris at a friends house in a different town, but yet they are not supposed to be on their hit parade.   I just ordered a white "Immortal" bearded iris from White Flower Farms.  Wish me luck.  I'll spray them with a deer off product when they are in bud and in flower just to be sure.

If I could guarantee that the deer would eat and kill off the awful yucca that the previous owner planted, I'd get some pet deer and fence them into the front yard! LOL.
