Pick Fine Gardening's new cover (post #16736)

No one every really knows what will sell and what won't. We have vigorous, lenghty discussions about what to put on our front cover every two months. Now, we are letting you decide. Use this link, cast your vote, and wait and see if your choice won.

So how long do we have to wait to find out which one won? You're going to let us in on it before the magazine comes out , right?

Wouldn't that spoil the surprise?

Here is the result (post #16736, reply #3 of 10)

Coneflowers: 51%

Focal Points: 49%

The thing about these surveys is that unless you have a runaway winner (by 20 percentage points or so), you don't really learn much. And with covers, you can't just go with the prettiest picture. You have to go with what will get people to pick up the issue and put down their $6.99.

So here is the winner (post #16736, reply #5 of 10)

With neither cover in the voting being a clear winner, we had to go back to the drawing board. Coneflowers had a slight lead and was a better cover subject than focal points (which isn't a great newsstand attention grabber). The problem was how to make coneflowers seem like a fresh topic. The article features varieties beyond the pink ones, which might help grab those eyes tired of the typical echinacea.

winners and the new coneflowers (post #16736, reply #6 of 10)

I'm curious to read what the author says about the new Echinaceas, given the mixed reviews some of them have been getting for garden performance. As for the typical pink, I consider them to be garden stalwarts and will never get tired of them.

BTW, the cover photo really is striking, esp with the dark banner background at the top.

I'm flattered. Does that come with any perks? Or should I run away?
