As all the leaves fall away, he perennials go dormant, hostas are just a memory; I can see the basic structure of my yard--a short privet hedge, a shrub border interplanted with an apple and a pear tree, my grape trellis, my long perennial border edging.
I look around and realize I use shrubs rather than hardscape to give my garden its structure. This sometimes gets lost within the tall perennials of summer. Other than foundation plantings I don't see a lot of gardeners using shrubs this way.
I am hoping for gardeners here this is probably not unusual. Let's see some pictures of the best uses of shrubs to lend structure to your garden! Hopefully you will inspire others!
