America's Early Orchards
When we were young, we used to have a 500 tree orchard just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Patrick County, Virginia. We tried to operate the orchard completely organically; and I vividly remember when the praying mantis egg cases arrived in the mail, running from tree to tree attaching them to the branches with string.

My first encounter with fall apples is still in my memory, overflowing baskets of all kinds at a local stand, Northern Spy, Red and Yellow Delicious, baking apples and more. The mingled fragrance was wonderful, the fresh cider like wine, and there were wonderful pies in an ice cream parlor across the road.
