Brown, hard spots on blackberries
Brown, hard spots on blackberries (post #17496)

We are new to growing small edibles. Many of our blackberries are luscious and beautiful but quite a few are developing hard, brown seeds. Our weather has been hot and extremely dry so I assume the problem is related to the weather? I've tried eating some with the hard bumps but they are tough and not edible. This is their second year in the ground.

I've seen the same thing... (post #17496, reply #1 of 2)
on my blackberries this year, and I'm pretty sure it's related to the hot, dry weather. Interestingly, after a rain, the berries are plump and tasty, spots or no spots.

When the blackberries start (post #17496, reply #2 of 2)
When the blackberries start coming on...and the weather is hot and dry...keep them well watered and picked regularly. If you live in a zone that is pretty hot in the summer then some light shading of the blackberries during the hottest part of the summer might help as well.
