Question On Pruning (post #18391)

About three or four years ago, we planted an apple sapling in our backyard. Not only has it not produced apples yet, but it's grown rather pitifully and with one branch sticking up at an almost 90-degree angle. It also has many 1-inch spikes sticking out from the trunk. How should I go about pruning it to make it look better, and what should I do to promote growth?

get a book with pictures (post #18391, reply #1 of 1)
Go to your library for a book on pruning, I like Cavendish's Encyclopedia of Pruning and Training, as the directions for pruning will be too difficult to follow here and having a book with pictures will be benefical when you are in the garden. Don't worry, it's not hard, but fruit trees absolutely need the direction of pruning or they all end up just like yours.
