artemesia division
I have heard that you can divide artemesia (silver mound) but with the woody steams I don't know where or how - OR when. Any suggestions?
thanks

Woody plants are divided by first digging them out of the ground , with a generous chunk of soil attached, using a garden shovel. Cut around the plant in a circle. After your first cut or two you should be able to see some roots. Dig the width you need to keep some good roots.Once the plant and roots are free, lay the root ball on the ground and determine how many sections you can make, by checking the above ground growth and the roots, and cut the ball, leaves and roots and all, into about 1-4 sections, depending on the size of the plant. Shake off some of the old soil, remove dead branches and leaves, and replant and water in.
I recently planted a new artemesia ,which later flopped over, and several branches broke. It is a somewhat tender plant that way, but I noted that the crown, or center part, started to regrow quite quickly.
