I have been told I can use newspaper and hay or straw to keep the weeds down in my vegetable garden. Which do I use hay or straw?

Your answer is STRAW!!  Hay will sprout whereas straw won't tend to.  It is a wonderful mulch except for a few things...slugs love to hide in it...especially when it's wet, and it isn't the most attractive mulch in the world.  One of my favorite things to do with it is to put it around tomato plants or any plants that don't like having their leaves get wet as it helps keep the plant's leaves off any wet soil.
