Vegetable Gardening In Containers In Canada?
Vegetable Gardening In Containers In Canada? (post #16551)
I recently moved to Northwest Ontario from South Ontario to be closer to my parents. Over where I used to live, I had no problem with large pests recking my garden. Recently while talking to my mom, I found out that the last few years, our town has had trouble with deer wandering into town and eating peoples plants. This year we want to try growing some of our vegetables in containers on our deck, in an attempt to try to keep the deer from getting at all our veggies. I was wondering what types of veggies grow good in containers, for those of us who live up North.
I was wondering in particular if anyone has had success with peas or string beans in pots. I was wondering if it would be worth trying to growing them in hanging pots for easy harvesting? Has anyone tried growing any of the vine type vegies in hanging pots? What types work well? I have heard that some tomatoe types do well in hanging pots.
I have grown tomatoes and cucumbers successfully in pots before. I am wondering what other types of vegetables people have grown successfully in pots, and which would work well in a cooler climate. I am especially interested in trying to grow lettuce, radishes, spinache, Swiss Chard, peas. string beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini squash, onions, carots, sweet peppers, and a variety of herbs this year. Much will be in our regular garden, but I would like to try growing some of it in containers as well. My herbs of course will be in containers, but are there any particular varieties of those vegetables mentioned above besides the tomatoes and cucumbers, that do well or better in containers, or in a cooler climate?
