Have you checked out FreeCycle in your area? You might try finding local gardeners by putting a similar plea on that site.

Go to FreeCycle.org, then to the Browse Groups tab, pick your state, and then look for a group near you. Obviously it does no good to find out that Sandy of Springfield is giving away tons of composted cow manure only to find out that she lives 500 miles away. And there will be a group near you. I live in the middle of nowhere, and there's a group here.

I love garage sales for finding "garden art" I look for old buckets and old or broken garden tools. Also, I have a few old wooden chairs in the garden I allow vines to climb up and over them.
Also, put up one of those cards in your local supermarket for stuff. I got alot of clay pots that way.
Also, if you don't mind digging alittle, we have a transfer station and they have a huge pile of broken concrete, old bricks and once I found a few slabs of marble that my son carved for the garden. Also, found some rebar and made a trellis out of it! The skys the limit!

All of the plant societys seem to have plant sales of their favorite plant. They often offer the finest cultivars and recent introductions as well as the old tried and true at a fraction of the cost from nursreys. They will be enthusastic about their plant and offer lots of good advice. Iris, dafodil and daylily are three that I have joined. You can google the National society of almost any plant you can name. From the National web site you will be able to find contacts for your local society.

Sorry Carol, I just wasn't being very clear. What I meant was that there are societies for almost every genus. If you google the plant name you will likely find the society web site. It doesn't always work. In the case of iris there are too many other uses for the word "iris" so I googled "American Iris". I hope I'm being more helpful this time.
